If you're stuck in an airport for a while, and you have a sketchbook with you, a great place to sit is near the security screening area.
People get into all sorts of interesting poses as they're putting themselves back together.
Traveler's Tip: In Chicago O'Hare airport, you can sit at the entrance to the E/F gates of Terminal 2. There's a Starbucks perfectly positioned with cafe tables that have a good view in that direction.

Excellent question! Since the crackdown on "illicit fluids" or whatever Homeland Security refers to them as these days, I was wondering what you used, as well. Do you have a "travel set" for airports and such?
It could be the Starbucks dark roast.
I have used dark coffee for a sketch wash, but this time I used a water brush and a watercolor pencil.
I've often thought about doing this, but my inner 'fraidy cat worries that the TSA would see this as some kind of 'intelligence gathering activity'...
Michael, You might be right -- there may be some rule on the books about not photographing or drawing around the checkpoint -- I don't know. (Though the thought of terrorists using sketchbooks is pretty hilarious.) In my case I was sitting a ways off in a cafe, so none of the officials or passengers even looked over at me.

airports are definitely one of my favorite places for undercover sketching.
Interesting - it would be the guy with a fez and a beard that gets patted down. Wonder if he gets that every time.
Nice idea. I allways have trouble finding somehere good to sit when I think of sketching people in public... Either people are too far away or move away too fast.
