There's a new life down on the farm. Her name is Rosebud. She's a miniature-horse filly, and she's less than two weeks old.
She has four modes, which she alternates every ten minutes: 1. Running at top speed, 2. Nibbling on everything, 3. Nursing to refuel, and 4. Napping in a sunbeam.
I tried to catch her during nap mode for a watercolor pencil portrait. When I was finished, she hopped up in nibble mode and wanted to know all about the sketchbook.
Happy Easter, folks!

Aw, that painting captures her expression so nicely. What a great animal and a great painting!
Fantastic study.
a beautiful tender little piece,
Your studies are great, but this one is exceptional!
Hello James:) Ooooooh she is beautiful... for real and on your watercolor. Lovely. Have nice Easter to you too!
Agree with phiq. Your studies are great, but this one struck me as exceptional!
wonderful study !!
One of your best little watercolor!
A little masterpiece in classical sense.
So nice, a big welcome to that little wonderful Rosebud !
This one is truly superb,James. Exceptional, as others have said. Sometimes "sketches" (especially yours) rise to a level as wonderful as any "fine" art.
Hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend!
Oh my goodness, she is so beautiful! What a precious little blessing! :) Gorgeous portrait too!
James, you're going to publish a book of your sketches, aren't you? I can see it coming. It would be a no brainer given the massive number of exquisite works already available. It wouldn't even have to be a tutorial, just a materials once-over at the beginning of the book. Sign me up for the first copy!
Thanks, everybody. Your encouragement makes me want to take risks for my art and try things I might not have tried otherwise.
I forgot to mention that there's another miniature horse, Tasha, who is expecting to foal in the next few days, so there may be a second baby horse on the scene soon.
Lester, thanks. I've got lots of ideas for books (and apps) based on my sketchbooks, and am eager to get to those projects as soon as I finish what's on the plate now.
What a beautiful little animal! And what a beautiful painting - you have captured the animal perfectly with its softness and gentlesness of its young life. A truly beautiful work.

Wow, amazing textures! The fur is very convincing! What size is this James? Any video of this painting in process?

Jonathan, it's about 4x7 inches. I didn't video this drawing, but I brought a video camera with me this morning when I sketched Rosebud sleeping again. I'll share it in the future.
