I recall all too well, back in 1976, art directors (read all male) who were very impressed by my portfolio asking me why I wanted to be an illustrator and why not just get married. Hopefully such stupid questions aren't asked anymore but clearly the attitude in the art world is still in full force.

And Jim, I had to smile - of course the vast majority of consumers of art periodicals and workshops are women.

Thanks for your wonderful blog.Eileenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07395082045007205525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-68324587969545330922012-05-01T09:31:27.526-04:002012-05-01T09:31:27.526-04:00Thanks, Anon. The featured artists are mostly white male. I wonder what the gender breakdown would be among American Artist's subscribers and workshop attendees. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority are women.James Gurneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01870848001990898499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-35002375174654466972012-05-01T09:00:53.459-04:002012-05-01T09:00:53.459-04:00Eileen, I noticed that too (hard not to). In a word, disheartening.

James, I admire your blog and your handwriting! Would love to see a post sometime on how you taught yourself copperplate.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-48005931107715646142012-04-29T17:54:53.360-04:002012-04-29T17:54:53.360-04:00Not to take anything away from the wonderful stamp...Not to take anything away from the wonderful stamp or American Artist Magazine, but I do feel obliged to take any obvious opportunity to question why women artists are virtually always outnumbered by men, as with this show. There are 16 male artists and 5 female artists in the core group already chosen for the exhibition. Really! It's 2012 not 1612 (nor even 1937). I have written to the magazine about this type situation before. Obviously, no response.Eileenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07395082045007205525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-42792184833087786482012-04-29T03:19:27.522-04:002012-04-29T03:19:27.522-04:00Gregory -- Thanks. Back then, 32 cents was enough for a first class letter, but now it's just enough to cover a postcard.James Gurneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01870848001990898499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-36119666526625091932012-04-29T03:15:06.222-04:002012-04-29T03:15:06.222-04:00Beautiful typography on that postcard!Beautiful typography on that postcard!Miranda Meekshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00427055414930432799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-63383839877571015872012-04-29T02:49:30.433-04:002012-04-29T02:49:30.433-04:00Can't make it, but it's nice to see that t...Can't make it, but it's nice to see that there is a dinosaur stamp.
