What a thoroughly fascinating thing to behold; I am just in awe as this seems to be the biggest one I have ever grown, and it seems totally obvious that some type of communication is going on as I have about 6 plants in one very large container. From it's point of view, it is twining counter-clockwise from the ground, and I am in Alberta, Canada! That video just blows my mind! Lol, now I have to check my clematis, too!! The pics on here are just breathtaking, too!! Thanks!! Then I came home and looked it up on the computer and found this page! I'm very curious about the coriolis effect/northern-southern hemisphere question. I LOVE the video of the morning glory vines! thanks for posting it.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04596265906233723561noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-16075453419374365472009-05-28T10:00:00.003-04:002009-05-28T10:00:00.003-04:00hi everybody!

It seems to be growing counterclockwise - perhaps this has to do with the specific variety, which the plastic card says is Aunt Dee. However, I was interested to note that *all* of its tendrils do grow with the same CCW twist.

Perhaps consistency is more important than the specific direction, at least for wisteria. I should have checked out the grape vines I ripped out of the trees last week...James Prayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12509353283987908424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-91998437481424221512009-05-26T11:14:16.091-04:002009-05-26T11:14:16.091-04:00Just like water going down a drain, more opposite ...Just like water going down a drain, more opposite spin according to whichever hemisphere a person is in.jeff jordanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05996337570175075303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-44057117446922697602009-05-26T11:02:31.084-04:002009-05-26T11:02:31.084-04:00Great pencil sketches and YouTube clip! And, appa...Great pencil sketches and YouTube clip! And, apparently there's more to the story. A vine climbing clockwise in the northern hemisphere climbs counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere (and vice versa). Here's a quotation form a botanical source: Charles Darwin studied this aspect of plant growth and one of the plants that he chose to study was the West Australian Sollya heterophylla. He found that on a cool day Sollya took about eight hours to make one complete revolution around a stake. On a warm day the time was reduced to four and a half hours. It is also interesting to note that he observed, in the Southern Hemisphere, climbers twine counter-clockwise. In the Northern Hemisphere the direction of twining is reversed.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09596875722436085739noreply@blogger.com
