But to my knowledge, there wasn't much academic theory about landscape practice, and maybe that's a gap that modern academies can rectify.James Gurneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01870848001990898499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-7046665624099766892011-03-02T10:47:11.073-05:002011-03-02T10:47:11.073-05:00Great stuff but where are all the academic landsca...Great stuff but where are all the academic landscape painters alla Monsted?armandcabrerahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01772142818316748471noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-42175909418956153622011-03-02T05:37:29.901-05:002011-03-02T05:37:29.901-05:00Sad thing is how (in Europe) hard is to find good ...Sad thing is how (in Europe) hard is to find good teachers.
I think 90% of teachers I met were painting abstractions or silly "artistic" paintings - and... they are teaching figure drawing/painting.
This make me mad - as I can learn only from internet.
And I very often see people who are trying to learn/draw something and they have no one to help them with this.
Thank you for your blog and books Mr. Gurney:)Michałhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02591270700082026163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-80396670110904764892011-03-01T23:48:42.466-05:002011-03-01T23:48:42.466-05:00great vids, James! Sight-size is basically a form of tracing and allows students to create a beautiful, accurate and atmospheric image . A student can learn a lot from working this way which in turn can be applied to work using comparative measurements, working from photos, drawings etc.Off the Coast of Utopiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12025320647237757184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-41960448035617002282011-03-01T18:30:26.106-05:002011-03-01T18:30:26.106-05:00What an absolutely glorious set of videos, thank y...What an absolutely glorious set of videos, thank you for the link!SCIBOTIChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00842140645022557449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-52298085197457555862011-03-01T18:29:53.858-05:002011-03-01T18:29:53.858-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Off the Coast of Utopiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12025320647237757184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-3536346948931079902011-03-01T18:05:43.549-05:002011-03-01T18:05:43.549-05:00Thanks for the recommendation James.

Some use the term only to mean when you have your drawing and your object side by side and draw at life size, i.e. the size that you see it in, i.e. sight-size. They do that at Atelier Stockholm (I went there for a year). But the method which Mr. Szameit argues against is more what I like to call "measure first, then draw", in which you use measurements to plot out the figure or cast or what have you, instead of drawing the gesture of your object first, and then correct what you have drawn with measurements. I do agree that this approach sounds very counter-intuitive, and if it's the only thing you learn, will limit you severely. However, the fact remains that a lot of people use the much broader definition of sight-size, and in that sense it is a very helpful way of doing observational drawing.David Stillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06788583610600014354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-30652043815547692582011-03-01T13:54:48.352-05:002011-03-01T13:54:48.352-05:00The link to Off the Coast of Utopia garners a Page...The link to Off the Coast of Utopia garners a Page Not Found.
