I recently bought some tubes of casein paint (six colors based off of handprint’s “secondary palette”, the 4 Zorn palette colors, and an extra Titanium white). Using Titanium white for the Zorn palette doesn’t irk me that much, but using Titanium white as both a mixing and highlight white for my typical six-color palette makes me feel…weird. I use mostly Zinc white with gouache and use Titanium white for highlights and white-backing purposes, so seeing my colors become unbearably dull with Titanium white in casein irked me.

I tried using the Casein Emulsion with a zinc white pigment/water paste, but that ended in disaster.. and then it hit me: multiple sources state that you can mix casein with gouache! So i took out my M. Graham Zinc white gouache, put a few drops of casein emulsion on it, and I think I did it, I made a makeshift casein mixing white!

to;dr: needed a mixing white instead of Titanium white, after trial and error I found out that Zinc White gouache and casein emulsion makes a good result!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-8081016963675735132021-03-28T17:43:36.649-04:002021-03-28T17:43:36.649-04:00Thanks for this info! Eager to plunge in, I went ahead and used M Graham's white gouache to mix with it and it turned out great. We'll see if it holds up, but, so far, so good. I saw one person on instagram who is very accomplished says he seals his gouache paintings on panel with cold wax and so does not have to use glass. What do you think of that James? I am used to using museum glass for my pastels but would rather not have to if it is safe to frame unglazed.Eden Compton Studiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08408901151410400904noreply@blogger.com
