Would you recommend any kind of marker for quick black and white studies on regular toned paper (that is, not seized like watercolor paper)?
I've read you don't use them anymore as they fade away pretty quiclky, and still am trying to find an alternative to my regular paper. I couldn't find a decent portable hot pressed sketchbook so far.
Also, would water brushes filled with gray/shade watercolor paint work decently on bristol board or alike?

Thanks again!
Cheers from the Sunny SicilyFabiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17178447427477151830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-52528933443558771812015-07-19T18:38:01.285-04:002015-07-19T18:38:01.285-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Fabiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17178447427477151830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-53324452175043801022015-07-19T04:19:10.861-04:002015-07-19T04:19:10.861-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.HNKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13679688307596294757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-83653206375285233882015-07-19T04:12:16.766-04:002015-07-19T04:12:16.766-04:00What an amazing on the spot sketch James! The greens of midsummer in the Northeast ...Michael,
The greens of midsummer in the Northeast can be fairly intense, so I sometimes soften or gray the colors and look for variation in the greens. For the same reason, I might not want to paint a bright blue sky the way it appears, as it, too, can be overpowering. Limited palettes like this one can help.
James Gurneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01870848001990898499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-67667098935803863972015-07-18T15:30:13.897-04:002015-07-18T15:30:13.897-04:00I realize that you are working with a limited pale...I realize that you are working with a limited palette here (no green) but I was interested in something you mentioned in the Watercolor in the Wild dvd (while painting the green house I think) that it is a common practice in painting outdoors to paint the overwhelming greenery in the background as a duller grayer color. Just curious about the thought process there since it is not a rule that is used in every piece, so is the decision based on contrast or color focus etc?Michael Dooneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00246162742705076367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2999230124118604245.post-16004472651891219872015-07-18T11:13:37.101-04:002015-07-18T11:13:37.101-04:00Great video and very timely for me.
