Early Poortvliet

The Dutch artist Rien Poortvliet (1932-1995) is best know for "Gnomes" and many other illustrated books. But before he did those works on his own, he was a prolific book and advertising illustrator.

Blog reader Christoph Hueur went to the Rien Poortvliet museum and was allowed to take some pictures from Poortvliet's early illustrated books. You can survey his image collection here: http://web.me.com/heuerdesign/Gefunden/album_poortvliet_pim_frits_en_ida.html

Thanks, Christoph! http://www.christophheuer.com/

  3. James,
This is one of my absolute favorite books! (I certainly hope you can fix the links so your many blog-friends can share the drawings and paintings of Rien Poortvliet.) I strongly recommend the ‘Noah’s Ark’ book as a ’must have’ for any serious student of the visual arts. His Landscape paintings are stunning in their simplicity and power, and his drawings full of life and sensitivity. He narrates a wonderfully poetic story with wit and a generosity of spirit, intelligence, and personal insight that is rare and refreshing.
If you don’t have this book in your Library, or better yet…open on your reading table, take this opportunity to treat yourself. You won’t regret it!. -RQ

  4. For those receiving the 404, us this link - http://web.me.com/heuerdesign/Gefunden/album_poortvliet_pim_frits_en_ida.html
If you'll note, it seems the original link just had some improper formatting in front of it.

  5. A favorite in our house when I was growing up was "He Was One of Us" -- Poortvielt's paintings of the life of Christ.

  6. I'm familiar with the Gnomes book. That was the basis for the 1980s animated series, the Adventures of David the Gnome. That used to run on Nickelodeon with the late Tom Bosley voicing the title character.
