Demo Portrait of Fernando Freitas

On Monday I shared a lecture and demo to a full house at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto.

(Video link) The model for the demo was Mr. Fernando Freitas, co-founder of the Academy. Since I only had 25 minutes to do the drawing, I used the same technique that I like to use for sketching people "in the wild"— in restaurants, subways, or concert halls.

Materials: Caran D'Ache watercolor pencils and a Niji Waterbrush on a smooth Fabriano Watercolor Pads.

I'd like to thank Fernando, and everyone who came to the talk at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto, especially the folks who came all the way from Ottawa. And thanks to Lenny Dass, for shooting the video.

  3. Have you ever considered holding a workshop at your studio, or somewhere near by, where you demo this tech and then help students with their sketches? If not, please do.

  7. Hey James, this is Ian from ARA, I wanted to thank you again for the awesome lecture and for signing my book. ALso, I would like to ask you a few questions, that I was unable to ask when you were at ARA.

1 What led you to pursue a career as an Artist?

2 What excites or interests you the most about being an Artist?

3 What do you find is the thing you like the best about being an Artist?

4 What kinds of challenges or problems do you have to deal with in your work?

5 What skills does a person need to meet these challenges?

    Thanks again, Ian

  8. Concept Dragon--Sorry to miss you at ARA. I stayed until the last answering every question.

These questions are quite broad, and difficult to answer quickly. A lot of the rewards and challenges are things I talk about on the blog. May I suggest you take a look at some of the published interviews:
