On Tuesday I went into Kingston, New York, to renew my driver's license. Afterward I stopped to do a watercolor-pencil sketch of
J. Massey Rhind's sculpture of "Old Peg Leg"
Peter Stuyvesant. Stuyvesant the last director-general of New Holland. He lost his leg in 1644 and replaced it with a wooden peg stuck full of silver nails.
In a previous
GJ post on bronze weathering, I showed an oil study of Rhind's sculpture of Governor Clinton.
RRRRRRRRR maatee
ReplyDeleteby the way ...I saw a pirate documentary where the question was asked ..."Where did the pirate "RRRRRR matee" come from? Seems it came from an old B&W English action movie.
Ha... I live in Bristol. RRRRR mate isn't said anymore (due to widespread commedic effect) but pirate speak is nothing more than a strong Bristolian accent. Lots of RRRRR. oo RRR duno.
ReplyDeleteGreat Smarty....You get the skinny on Gurney Journey....now shiver me timbers
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure "Arrr" is actually "Aye" with the accent that Smarty mentioned (saying "I" would probably sound the same).
ReplyDeleteAye is more Yorkshire, which is actually where I'm from. I say 'Aye' all the time. The people where I'm living say Arr. :D
ReplyDeleteYour paintings from life are awesome!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Stuyvesant was part of the inspiration for R E Howard's Solomon Kane?
