    i'd imagine it would be great practice in learning how to illustrate books - rather than trying to read... for me, when i hear things i get better visual images.

    You could also try http://librivox.org/. They have only audio-books, so it's easier to find stuff that you can listen to.

    I used to think that the only thing I could listen to while drawing was music - that something as intelligent as an audio-book or lecture would distract my brain from the task at hand. But once I began playing lectures from academicearth.org as I worked on my comic, I realized that wouldn't be an issue. Why should I have difficulty listening to lectures when I'm supposed to be drawing, since I spent 17 consecutive years drawing when I was supposed to be listening to lectures?

    Depending on your location, a lot of libraries are now allowing you to "check out" digital audio books, downloading them via internet and they delete themselves after a month. It's good for finding more recent stuff, since Librivox is mainly just copyright-expired books.

    I've just spent the last few minutes going "wow", "nice" and "always meant to read that" at the audio book list.

    I'm not really a music person while being creative, and I much prefer listening to speech radio and audio readings. I mainly listen to Radio 4, and especially enjoy their Book of the Week, Book at Bedtime and Afternoon Play via their Listen Again internet facility.

    Thank you so much for the URL. All I have to do now is decide what to listen to first!

    I listen to lectures from ‘The Teaching Company’ at:
    www.teach12.com
    They have a wide variety of courses in history, art, science and math, philosophy, religion and mythology, and much more. The tapes, cd’s, and dvd’s, aren’t free, but I listen to them over and over. Thanks for the great post James, and thanx to the other bloggers for their info as well. -RQ

    Great stuff! I just read Stephen King's memoirs and he had recommended audiobooks as a great way to get reading in while traveling. I'm going on a 4 hour car ride today. I can listen to an entire book.

    I'd like to see how easy it is to paint while listening to an audiobook though, though I often listen to podcasts and thats been undistracting.
