It's the final day of Video Week. Today the camera flies through my studio, ending with a demo of how I paint the rainbows in copies of my book Color and Light.
From now through the month of March, if you order a copy of Color and Light from the Dinotopia Store I'll do a similar sketch in your copy.
Tomorrow, I'll announce the "Color and Light" Book Trailer Video Contest.

ReplyDeleteNice
;)
James, every post of your invigorates my interest in my own art and the world around me, thank you.
ReplyDeleteJames I'm going to have to start reading your blog at night. When I read it in the morning it sends me off onto all kinds of tangents learning about art. This morning I read it and started going crazy with all of the ideas that are flooding to me for your video contest, when I should be starting work on my own illustration work. I don't know if I'll have time to do a video for the contest but I'm eager to see what others come up with. You sure know how to set the standard!Just Amazing!
ReplyDeletethat rainbow painting gadget it pure genius, is that your own creation?
ReplyDeleteHow could I possibly resist such an offer.
ReplyDeleteBless you for all your wisdom and love of sharing.
When I received my copy of Color and Light the illustration you did just floored me.
ReplyDeleteNow to see your unique technique makes it even more special.
What I like most about your work, besides sharing your wealth of knowledge, is that you are obviously having fun.
I think your my hero.
:)
I have quietly been reading your blog since a Google search for "limited palettes" led me to your blog almost a year ago.
ReplyDeleteI was on Amazon last night ready to order "Color and Light" and didn't do it because I really want a signed copy... except you don't ship to Canada. After seeing this video I REEEEEALLLY want a signed and a book from somewhere else won't do! I'm in bit of a conundrum!
Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge.
Great Video James- thanks for saving the best for last!
ReplyDeleteawsome production value, really cool stuff, i was thinking you would break chracter from serious to goofy a few times, haha
ReplyDeletei really enjoyed the entire, week, and i know i'm being greedy, but....did we miss a video day on monday? haha
anywho, looking forward to hearing about the contest! i'm in for sure!
Thanks everybody. Eric, yes, I made one other video that was supposed to post automatically yesterday, but it didn't work, so I'll put it up in a week or so.
ReplyDeleteNicki, sorry I don't do orders for international customers, because the costs and paperwork and losses got to be too much of a hassle. Maybe if you have a friend or relative in the USA, you could order through them and have me ship to them.
Michael, yes, I came up with that gadget. I'll do a "making-of-the-making-of" post in a few days. The movie people among you will be amused by the improvised camera rigs.
Awesome! I loved the video. Thanks for always inspiring my work.
ReplyDeleteHello James,
ReplyDeleteI just want to thank you for both "Color and Light" and "Imaginative Realism". I have learned SO much and I will keep comming back to these books to guide me when I'm painting.
Thanks again!
This was an extremely cool video! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThe videos were a nice treat! And what a great finale, I had a big smile on my face when the smoke appeared from the left as we journeyed through your studio haha :D
ReplyDeleteI love how you take the items already in your studio and take us on a fantasy trip. Your creativity is amazing!
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing this awesome video and sketch, I'm pretty disappointed that I got mine at amazon, instead of through the Dinotopia Store. :(
ReplyDeleteI love the special effects in the video. I was planning to order the book and am glad I waited. I will have to order tomorrow as I am out of time. Looking forward to reading and learning from the book.
ReplyDeletejust delightful -
ReplyDeleteso, Jim - a question:
are all the personalised, hand-drawn
artist-dinosaurs left-handed ?
(this is actually the compelling reason
to get the copy(ies) )
(seriously was considering, and now the end of this video just put me over the top -- i.e., I no longer want, but I need...).
Mr. Gurney,
ReplyDeleteWill all the signed books include a rainbow or "just" the sketch?
Thank you.
J.R. and Nimbus, yes, all the orders will get both the rainbow and the critter. It might be another kind of monster or dinosaur, depending on what mood strikes. But they'll probably all be lefthanded because it's easier to draw.
ReplyDeleteI stumbled across your blog . . .
ReplyDeleteI very much enjoyed your painting rainbow . . . and the smile on your face as you were creating the art.
You definitely enjoy what you do and I see the passion you have to share of yourself.
I was interested in what was in your "bag" of tools. I have to say after seeing these two posts and how you leave the oragami treats for others to find has made me a follower. I look forward to coming back to read your older posts and whatever you have yet to come.
I love this rainbow paintings..Nice work done by you..
ReplyDeleteThanks for share a good ideas regarding the rainbow paintings..
