Dan Gurney at the Indy 500

This is the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 car race. My cousin Dan Gurney and his team made a major contribution to the Indy 500 in the 1960s and ‘70s.

The Eagle race cars that he manufactured won the race in 1968, 1973, and 1975. As a driver, Dan came in 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd in 1968, 1969, and 1970. Dan, who just turned 80, is at the Indianapolis Speedway this weekend participating in the ceremonies.

That’s me and Dan at a race in Lime Rock, CT a while ago. Today, Jeanette and I are going to Lime Rock to watch Dan’s son Alex racing in the Grand-Am Rolex Series.

  1. Very cool. Being a fan of racing in general. Dan's name is very familiar to me.

  2. Wow. I didn't know you two were related! Something about the Gurney family seems to create people who become giants in their fields! The effects you two have had are felt daily. Dan's famous 'Gurney flap' is used every Sunday around the world and your blog is a daily resource for artists around the world.

So, can I apply for adoption into the Gurney family? :)

  3. One has to race to keep up.

Keeping up with new Gurney Journey entries.
    Sign of the times?

  4. Gurney and Gurney
    Who Knew?

My first car I bought (not the hand-me-down) was a 1968 Mercury Cougar 'Dan Gurney Special'.

That was great car from the era of The Big Three.

  5. THAT guy is 80?
Or you said the photo was from "a while ago". Maybe quite a while ago? (You look rather young yourself there.)

  6. Vicki--He's a young 80--rides around on motorcycles that he designed. But you're right: That picture was taken about 20 years ago. Just "a while ago," right?
