Smokey the Rabbit

You may have heard of Smokey the Bear, but this is Smokey the Rabbit.

I was able to buy new sketching supplies here in Kansas City, so I'll be doing my first demo here at Spectrum Live today at 4:00. It' won't be a big deal, but I thought I could show a few interesting ways of using water soluble pencils and brush pens.

  1. Mr Gurney I love your quick watercolour sketches, I'm always trying to imitate it in my sketch books over here in England!! but your work had such an effortless quality with precision at the same time. you book, the artists guide to sketching has really helped. your books are some of the greatest a student artist can own, I thank you for that man! could you possibly do a video showing your methods? if you have already, could somebody please send me a link. cheers! -P.S. please come to London!!-

  2. I swear, I learn something from each one of your "little" sketches.

And you may think your demo "won't be much" but to those of us who follow your blog, seeing you sketch live would be a real treat.

  3. Jake, Thank you. I shot a detailed video of sketching a miniature horse, start to finish in 15 minutes. It's not released yet. I want to compile several of those into a video so you can see the process, and release free shorter versions on the web.

Meanwhile, check out my donkey portrait video: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2011/09/donkey-portrait.html

And there are other drawing videos on my "GurneyJourney" YouTube channel.

  6. Good news. I recently started using watercolor pencils, and am still very much in a leaning phase. And I've just started using them with a water pen. So I'm sure that these new posts of yours will be very helpful. (As all of them always are).
    So, thank you in advance.

  7. Hi James,

Since Jake brought it up: you know, used copies of "The Artist's Guide to Sketching " are going for $400-$500 dollars on Amazon! It must be quite a book. Has anybody ever talked about reprinting it? I'd sure love a copy of my own.

  8. Wonderful rabbit sir. It looks like you may have taken a picture of it instead of drawing it.
