Caricaturing Conan


(Video link) In this video produced by the National Portrait Gallery, artist John Kascht shares the thinking behind his caricature of Conan O' Brien.

"I don't think about caricature as distortion. It's magnification. There's a big difference. It's precisely because I am going to amplify someone's features that I do care about clarity."

    more interesting than Conan is Mr. John Kascht himself. What an observant eye and mind he has. I loved watching him work and his train of thought.

    What a great, inspiring video - thanks for posting! I love seeing the amount of research that goes into the creation of a single image, and hearing the thought process behind the work. Also love this line: "The notion of 'capturing a likeness' implies a hunt, and that's exactly what it's like. Initial sketches are bushwhacks... sometimes I'm hot on the trail, sometimes it goes cold, but at this stage, nothing is a mistake, it all gets me closer."
