IMC Goes Live at 3:00

The enrollment for Illustration Master Class goes live today at 3:00.

The week-long fantasy art workshop will take place June 10th-16th 2013 in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Approximately 80 participants, using both traditional and digital techniques, will choose one of five assigned illustration topics (things like "Joan of Arc," "Ice Giant," "Dragon Horde", etc.). The students proceed from sketch to finish during the week under the guidance of the group faculty. Students range from serious beginners to working pros who want to expand their skills. In addition to fantasy, science fiction, and concept art, there is also a big welcome to people who want to explore a graphic novel or a children's book solution.

This year the faculty includes:  Boris VallejoJulie BellRebecca GuayDonato Giancola, Greg Manchess (above)Dan DosSantosScott FischerIrene GalloIain McCaig, with special guest Mike Mignola for three days of the week. I'll also join in for two days (two lectures, a demo, and a visit to (hopefully) each and every student's workspace).

Meals and lodging are included with the $2250 tuition. You stay in the posh student dorms of Amherst College. In addition to the hard work, there's always fun stuff going on: lectures, demos, book signings, caricature sketching, mock battles in armor, ice-cream runs, and frisbee games. In other words, bonding and life-altering inspiration.

It fills up fast, so if you're interested, sign up early!

  1. I'm still interested in the IMC, but I may have a conflict that week. Do you plan to do more of your own workshops in the next year? I would be very interested attending if so.

  2. Hey, Matthew. Yes, it's a busy week for a lot of folks. It would be great to meet you. I don't think I've got any other workshops on the radar right now, but check "Upcoming Appearances" on the blog, and I'll try to list future gigs there.

  3. I'm looking forward to this immensely. Trying to see if my dad would like to go as well (keeps fingers crossed). Almost went last year, and really regretted that I didn't.

  4. I'm looking at the registration site now, and would love to attend, but not sure if I can afford it. James, what do you know about their online classes, SmArt School? This looks promising . . .

  5. Hi Mr Gurney
Something I want to share (your blog is best place for this):
Printable lowpoly mask - I was searching for such thing for some time and finally someone did this

Seems to be good as cheap, easy to make reference model.

  6. Thanks, Gutek -- I saw that too, on BoingBoing--nice plane head. Clever bit of paper engineering, and something artists can use.

  7. Well, never mind. I just looked at the tuition for the SmArt school. Still out of my league. Poo.

  8. Hi, Janet, sorry not to get back to you. I really don't know anything about the SmArt school.

  9. Hello! it's been a year now that i am thinking on attending workshops. Everything i learned so far comes from books and some fantastic blogs such as yours. For me, IMC would likely cost double since i have to travel roughly one third of the globe, but what worries me is another thing: how can i tell if that's what i need at a given time? Is it possible to tell if I'm good enough to get the maximum out of the experience?
