Awkward family portraits

It's awfully hard to paint a group scene and get everything working together. So just for fun, here are some awkward family portraits by artists of the past. Here's "Self Portrait with Family" by George Dawe (1781-1829).

"Self Portrait with his Family and Father in Law," by Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678).

For more amusing awkwardness, check out the Awkward Family Photos website.

  1. That top one is especially hilarious. It looks like a poorly thought out cut and paste. (And I suppose that's exactly what it is.)

...One has to wonder who that woman was who's peering out that window in the background...a mistress?

  2. Very interesting...
99.99% of the photos are from white families...
Is Awkward Family Photos website an anti-white liberal page ?

These days rascism against whites are normal.
I am brazilian and here liberal racism against whites are OK.
It´s very hard to live here as a white person.
I think that US is in the same path.

    The world is upside down.

  4. Tom and Jane, thanks for pointing her out. I didn't even notice her.

Nuum, I don't think there is any anti-white racism going on. The premise of Awkward Family Photos is that people submit their own photos. The concept, according to the site, is to create "a friendly place where everyone could come together and share their uncomfortable family moments." I think making fun of ourselves is OK and healthy, don't you?

  5. Mr Gurney.

I am from a country where liberal racism against whites is on the Media, boooks, music and on the streets. I´ve noticed some signs of this disease on US too.
As I said, the world is upside down.
As far as the site, I don´t know.
It's very strange that no non-white family had submitted their photos...

    I LOVE YOUR WORK, MASTER.

  8. Jeff,
98% of the afro-americans voted for Obama in 2008 Election.
Of course they aren't racists; They thought Obama was the best candidate 8:)
