Eugenè Burnand's painting hangs in the Orsay Museum in Paris. I've often lingered in front of it - it's one of my favourite paintings there. It's quite small in person (made all the smaller by the large paintings surrounding it) and painted with plenty of texture and expression.
I like the three point perspective and low viewpoint in Bouguereau's piece.
Happy Easter James. There doesn't seem to be as many resurrection paintings as crucifixion paintings.. i guess it's a harder thing to depict... Howard Pyle has one of the angel @ the tomb:

Just found a high resolution version of it : http://rsc.byu.edu/sites/default/files/Image%206%20copy.jpg
ReplyDeleteI love the expression in the faces, and the figure on the left looks vaguely like Orlando Bloom (maybe it's just me!)
Happy Easter, and thanks for sharing so much in your blog!
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you and yours
ReplyDeleteThe emotion in those faces is spot on for this day. Good choice
