Cooler Case

Cooler case, gouache, casein, and colored pencils, 5 x 8 inches
It's the quiet time at the diner, the middle of the afternoon, just a few regular customers.

There's a cooler case behind the counter. Barb takes a sponge to the stainless steel doors, which reflect two wavy swirls of light. One swirl is the yellow fluorescent above our booth, and the other is the green trees outside.

Barb calls out to Mel, "Don't let me go home without a piece of carrot cake or cheesecake. That's my treat to myself."

  1. I love the reflection effect on the fridge. And this question may seen off-topic, but is there any way I could pre-order your video via Gumroad? Thank you.

  2. Hi, HNK, No, I haven't even uploaded the Gumroad file. I'll do that over the weekend and it will be ready on Monday. Not long now!

  4. Chomping my bit for the new video...But I digress.

I love the way this painting walks that line between realism and abstraction, and manages to be both at the same time. For me, that's the essence of the pleasure of paint: you can see both the beauty of the medium and also the things or people it's intended to represent.

  5. James,

I like this little sketch best of all the ones I've seen you do these last few years. It took me just a moment to realize what the subject was, a fun 'ah ha' moment. Isn't it amazing how important the accents are to a sketch. Not too little, not too much.
Are you pulling our leg, "Mel" really?

  6. That you would find inspiration in this subject says something about your artistic confidence and maturity. Many good lessons, here.

  7. A few hours have passed since I first viewed this piece and I'm struck by how much bluer it seemed to appear before. I guess something about the metallic surface left a blue impression in my mind. Anyway, impressive handling as always!
