Animal Illustration Reference

Albrecht Dürer's 1502 drawing of a rabbit or hare is one of the pictures in a new book called Animal Illustration: The Essential Reference.

The collection starts in the 15th century and includes many examples from the Victorian era, including these chromolithographs.

Some of the animal illustrations are natural-history renderings that attempt to be objective, while others are character drawings that use anthropomorphism to bring out the animals' personalities.

There is also a good sampling of 19th- and 20th-century Art Nouveau designers such as Anton Seder (1850-1916) and M.P. Verneuil.

I'm honored that the final pages of the book include some of my illustrations for Dinotopia. On the left are some of the oil wash illustrations in Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time, and on the right is a detail from "Dinosaur Parade."

There are also some examples from Dinotopia: The World Beneath.

The book closes with one of my paleo-illustrations, showing Titanoboa, the extinct giant snake from South America.
