Painting efficiently is not just about painting quickly—it's about getting a lot done in whatever amount of time you've got.
Efficiency is not the main goal in art. Sometimes in the controlled conditions of the studio you might want to throw away the clock. But having those skills can really help when you're facing the rapidly shifting conditions of just about any outdoor motif.
That's what I cover in the next issue of International Artist Magazine, issue #122 (August / September 2018).
Is it on the news stands now? Want to go buy it.
ReplyDeleteI just got my advance copies. I'm not sure if it's on the stands yet. You might give it a week or two to be sure.
ReplyDeleteNot on sale here in Louisiana yet. You’re in June and July and so is Colley but it’s that efficiency article in Aug Sept I’m really excited about.
DeleteIn anticipation of the article, is efficiency a skill intentionally practiced or is it more a result of a more wholistic development of all skills? becoming quicker seeing, mixing, nailing perspectives, etc....
ReplyDeleteThomas, it comes of practice, and a kind of time-motion awareness. The key is to pick up the pace without sacrificing accuracy.
ReplyDeleteDo you also talk about setting up more efficiently? I've never gotten a good rhythm for setting out my palette colors, putting out brushes/rags, etc. indoors or outdoors. -Jane
