Abney Effect

The Abney effect is the name for the apparent shift in a color's hue when white light is added to it.

Note how the blue appears to shift to reddish violet as it gets lighter.

The apparent shift is due to physiological, not physical causes.

  1. Does it matter which blue is used - or was this a theoretical blue?

Cyan, ultramarine, pthalo, all of them, in any combination or format by vendor? Watercolor versus oils?

I feel like this is an important concept and would love for you to tell us more - have you seen this in your work?
