Sky galleys are pedal-powered blimps that resupply the high mountain settlements of Dinotopia.
In the pure silence above the Tentpole of the Sky you can hear them creaking and whirring as they approach from far away.
The pilots must plan their journeys, because they can get tossed about in storms.

I sat and looked at this painting for a good while this morning, zooming in and marveling at the detail and subtlety in the snow shadows, the stonework of the castle, the mountain goats in the foreground, the morning light… it’s just amazing. Then I zoomed out and just took in the painting as a whole again, and was reminded of the feeling I’d get as a child - a mix of wonder and optimism. I know we sometimes treat illustration as somehow a lesser art form than classical fine art, but I would be happy to sit in an art gallery and look at this painting all day. Wonderful work, and thank you for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteHi James. I've often wondered where the lighter-than-air gas for the sky galleys comes from. Is it methane produced from the dinosaur waste collected by the humans? It seems like the methane would be useful for all sorts of things in addition to the sky galleys such as gas for street lights in Water Fall City.
