Some years ago I met up with Dirk Zimmer in a diner and sketched his portrait. He regaled me with stories of his early escapades when he was growing up in Hamburg, Germany.
Dirk, or "Dizi" as he was known, worked in the abstract art movement, and eventually made his way to America in 1977, where he became known as a writer and illustrator of children's books. He was a scholar of folklore and mythology with a big collection of books on the subject.
Sadly, he died in 2008 after being accidentally struck by a motorist while taking a walk near his hometown of Tivoli, New York.
