Color in Practice Now Available

My new tutorial, "Color in Practice, Part 1: Black, White, and Complements" is now available. (Link to 1-minute trailer on YouTube)

Gary Geraths, Artist and Professor at Otis College of Art and Design, says:
“After 30 years of being in the trenches, teaching college students the theory and practice of landscape drawing and painting there is always the intimidation of them taking it into the real world and practicing it. Watching James walk us through the process really sands off the "sharp edges" of translating tone to color in plein-air painting and makes it thoroughly understandable. My students really watched and listened to the "down and dirty" realness of the practical knowledge in the video and it certainly help them in their own artwork. Having been painting for years I watched and learned a lot myself, amazed at the fluidity and simplicity of how James presented the step-by-step instruction and painted results. This is such a great learning tool and would be a great addition to any classroom.”

Color in Practice --69 minutes. Studio exercises and practical applications on location.

I just bought mine. I am not a good black and white person (in artistry - I sure am when it comes to "issues" - ha ha) so this will be a good starting point. Thank you.

Happy to add another JG video in my collection! Can't wait to watch it. I know it's going to be super. And I'm reminded to read through your book Color and Light again, which is so good. Thanks for sharing your expertise in such an affordable way, Jim!

I have been slowly watching this all day in between customers and I was grateful I bought a copy. (Hopefully later in the week I can watch it again without interruptions.) This has some great information and some good long sequence shots as you built up paintings that help me see the process in greater detail. I just started playing with Casein last night so I am excited to go home and try some of what I learned with that.
Thank you for the great content and the good release day sale.

Ordered!

I ordered it (haven't watched it yet). Do you have any reference images you would recommend to practice the techniques and process (I'm sorry if you already addressed this in the video).

Thanks!

Very nice video! Great instruction on color complements and the basics of gouache (you've removed some of the mystery of this medium for me). I felt encouraged by your comments on self-instruction. Cheers!

Thanks, everyone. TolbertM, no I don't have a selected reference for people to work from. It's OK to paint the scenes from a photo, but it should probably be a photo you take yourself, or better yet, maybe you could set up a still life or paint a corner of your house interior.

Ted, glad to hear it.
