The Flying Car

The flying car was a main theme of yesterday’s dreams of the future.

The requirements: it must fit in the garage, drive on a road, take off in a small space, and fly on its own power without adding or subtracting any parts.

Finally, there’s a prototype that seems to meet the test. Now we’ve just got to figure out how to deal with air traffic.

Neat but that's one ugly mammerjammer! I'd hate to get a ding in the parking lot and then wonder if my wing is going to fall off mid flight lol!

Well, I think it needs's improvements, you won't be able to drop the kids of at school in this thing.

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man...

...landing is the first.

There was still "helicopter in every garage" talk back when I was a kid, and I was excited. But as I grew up and saw how people behaved on the roads, I imagined that behavior transferred to the air...and I breathed a sigh of relief there weren't any flying cars!

Actually, NASA has allready developed a computer system to regulate flying car traffic. It just needs to be put to use. :)

I actually saw a header in a local newspaper today that said it will be allowed on the Belgian roads.

Ha - I used that same Pop Mechanics cover in an article on this very same topic a while back. You may find this amusing: http://centuryofprogress.wordpress.com/

The future as predicted by Popular Sci/Mech. I had a blast with those old covers.

If it's light enough to fly it probably can't survive a small fender bender on the road. I'd add some kind of lightweight composite roll cage. But still, against a car or suv, not sure if it'd get a five star safety rating! Maybe add some 'Demolition Man' foam from the movie to it also! Now we're flying!
