John Singer Sargent, Frieze of the Prophets, Boston Public Library |
"In 1913, at a national convention of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) in Richmond, Virginia, nineteen young women 'performed' the Frieze of Prophets as part of an elaborate outdoor pageant with 600 participants and 5,000 to 6,000 spectators. Thus Sargent’s Frieze found itself transported to an entirely new arena—a public park—in an evangelical Christian gathering of youth leaders." (
