Zinn's Chalk Paintings on Sidewalks

David Zinn found an art form that doesn't need to begin with a blank canvas.

He draws chalk characters that interact with manhole covers, lampposts and other street fixtures. He's not only an ingenious artist, but he's also an excellent public speaker.

What a great talk. And you're right, his speaking voice is excellent.

It's my pleasure and privilege to know David. You have commented on his voice. Many years ago, he had a radio program on the local public radio station. It was called "Mud Pie Café." It was somewhat aimed at kids, but very enjoyable for adults. He's also involved in painting holiday scenes on the windows of local businesses in November. I did a painting a couple years ago for the cover of a local publication, (the Ann Arbor Observer) showing David and a few others (including the uncle he mentions) putting finishing touches on the window of a coffee shop. It was while I was working on the window-painting cover that David told me about the Gene Kelly/lightpost mural he was finishing. I soon painted that as another cover for the Observer. I regard David as a local treasure.
