Gorilla No-Threat Glasses

Inspired by a post on this blog, The Dutch Rotterdam Zoo offered some goofy but safe glasses for gorilla viewing.

"Earlier this month at the Dutch Rotterdam Zoo, an eleven year old male gorilla named Bokito escaped and ran rampant through the Zoo’s food court, injuring a woman when he bit and dragged her some distance. Now, health insurance company FBTO is distributing eye-contact disguising glasses that allow zoo visitors to stare all they like, a behavior that is threatening to most of the great apes."

Excellent idea! A pair of those would work well in meetings. :)

When I was drawing a silverback at a zoo for an early reader I was illustrating, I was standing and was amazed that the silverback stood still "posing" for me to draw him. After a few minutes he charged me and slammed the glass in front of my face. Apparently I was threatening him by staring at him from above him eye level. My friend, also an artist who was drawing with me, was sitting on the floor waiting for that to happen. He thought it was hilarious.

Funny how things go... you come to a blog looking for Dinosaur paintings, it ends up being one of the five sites you visit daily, and one of the things you learn from it, and never forget, is primate "psychology". I was very impressed when you posted about drawing the chimp, and this is really cool. I reposted at my facebook site. Thanks for showing us this kind of things!

Ahahahaha! That's hilariously excellent.

We could do with some of those for public sketching.
