Chicago Art Institute Releases High-Res Image Files

The Chicago Art Institute is releasing high-res scans of many of its art files that are in the public domain.

The collection includes famous works by John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, Katsushika Hokusai, and Thomas Moran.


The Museum says:
"We’ve released thousands of images in the public domain on the new website in an open-access format (52,438 to be exact, and growing regularly). Made available under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license, these images can be downloaded for free on the artwork pages."

I was just looking for reliable resources for doing master studies without the colors being completely off. Thank you for bringing this up!

Really happy to see that they have a great archive, with many interesting images. But also that the open access format they used was IIIF (read triple-i-f).

That format allows others to use different readers if necessary, and even perform basic operations, with the possibility to share links with others, without having to edit images and share again (as well as metadata in some cases).

Don't let it stop you from coming to Chicago to see the work in person. I'm lucky enough to live there and keep a membership at the Art Institute so I can stop in any time I like and it's always a refreshing experience...reassuring that humans are capable of creating such wonderful things.
