Jim did this large pencil sketch while sitting amid the jangle of the midway at the local county fair. The carnival barkers were curious and came by to check out what he was doing. He was surprised how many of them were artists and poets and musicians.

Beautiful sketch!
Hi James, I just wanted to say again thank you for this blog. I think it's been over a year and the information and insight you've shared with us is priceless. It's so wonderful to know that there are artists and professionals who are very willing to share their insights with the blogosphere.
Thanks!!
Wonderful drawing.
"Step right up... three for a dollar"
wonderful sketch...love your work
I'm surprised he'd edit out the crowds, but it's a very nice drawing!
The attention to detail is wonderful. Especially the illustration of the carny fonts. I have the urge for a corn dog now.
I love all the work James Gurney does. When I hear about how he brings his supplies everywhere he goes I wonder if you almost need to have a kind of obsession about it. I'm not sure what others think about this idea but I know when I'm the most motivated to do artwork I feel, I too, have a bit of an obsession to see the work through to completion.
