Castle of the Maidens

In 1901, American expatriate artist Edwin Austin Abbey unveiled his mural epic "The Quest and Achievement of the Holy Grail" for the Boston Public Library.

One of the panels shows the following, according to the official text:

"Sir Galahad's entry into the Castle is here shown.
The imprisoned maidens have long been expecting him,
for it had been prophesied that the perfect knight would
come to deliver them. They welcome him with shy
delight, putting out their hands to be kissed; behind
him lies his white shield bearing the red cross painted
with his own blood by Josephes, son of Joseph of
Arimathea. Having accomplished this mission, Sir
Galahad passed on to other deeds."

The murals have been restored and are open to the public.

Beautiful painting and one that I hadn't seen before. It's terrible, but I can't think of Sir Galahad these days without thinking of Michael Palin in Monty Python's Holy Grail movie.

And all of this happened in the castle Anthrax!

This reminds me of a clothing rack at Macy's. Sorry, but that's the first thing I thought of. This is a composition? Looks like a pile-up.

Outstanding artwork. But Monty Python has twisted the world's view of that era of history. (snicker) It even overflowed into the new Robin Hood movie with Russell Crowe

between that and the sargent murals:

the BPL is a museum in itself.

I think the composition would work fine in the context of a book illustration. But definitely a no-no as a decorative wall mural in my opinion.
