Cows Love Music

I was hanging out once with a dairy farmer in his milking parlor in Wales. He switched on a tape machine to play some reggae for his Friesians. He said it helped get the milk flowing.

Apparently, cows love music.

(Direct link to video) This video proves that cows in France have a fondness for New Orleans jazz.

...Oh, and belugas like Mariachi music. Thanks, Dan

I'm not surprised you found cows in France.... but where did you find the Dixieland players playing N'Walins Jazz???

Arturo, I didn't shoot the video. It was done by "The New Hot Five," a jazz band from Utah. They shot it in Autrans in France.

You simply have to love a planet where stuft like this happens!

Most of the farmers in the area I grew up kept a radio on in the barn for the cows - "keeps 'em calm". Mostly country, sometimes classical. No Dixieland jazz, though!

So cows in France like Jazz, and cows in Wales like Reggae, so I wonder what the preferred music styling are for American cows?

@william -
the holsteins, a guernsey and a brown swiss (the milking cows, in the barn) seemed to prefer polka music - at least in our corner of Clark county, middle of cheese and dairy country of Wisconsin. the music clearly had an effect on overall mood and milk production.

I was hoping they were going to start dancing...

This is great! The cows are so cute! I will make sure to play music for my cows if I ever have a farm (hopefully some day).

You're welcome, Jim.

So true! To my grandpa's annoyance, my uncle would play rock n' roll to their milk cows in the 60's and subsequently would only give milk if the radio was on.

i learned as a young teenager that playing music for chickens seemed to help them. they actually seemed to enjoy it. it was country music of course. a more soothing country than what is the norm for today. i personally feel that the music if played softly during the night would block out noises and sounds that would awaken fowl. hense they get a better night sleep. better sleep means more productive animals....and humans for that matter.

I LOVE how the guitar player in the Mariachi band begins to reinforce the beluga's head movements. Carl Sagan was clearly on to something.
