Painting at Dublin's Dead Zoo
I visit the "Dead Zoo" (also known as the National Museum of Ireland, Natural History) to paint the skeleton of a hippo in watercolor and gouache. (Link to video YouTube).

Very much like the “whittling it out of wood” phrase for your painting process of working from large forms to small details. Useful, easily-remembered analogy.
I had heard that stat about hippos, but it really hit home after hearing a recounting of a harrowing tale of an attack. They are no joke. That skull looks prehistoric! Great sketch. I love the graphic black outline with the modeled elements.

Lovely hippo! I've got a skull cast of an Estemmenosuchus mirabilis and it always reminds me of a hippo skull.
