You don't have to paint exactly what you see.
You can paint a night scene in the middle of the day by shifting the colors inside and outside of the structures. In this new YouTube video, I take you to Ireland for some plein-air urban sketching.

I recently heard that night scenes painted during the day have a special term for them: Mockturnes. And that there seems to be an increasing number of buyers in that market. I usually paint mine outdoors at night or back in the studio, but I know many others who do what you do, taking the information and changing it slightly to create the nighttime feeling. I have turned daytime photos and plein air studies into night scenes in the studio, though. That's always fun. Thanks for the great post.
