Nicolai Fechin (1881-1955), born in Russia and ended his years in the southwestern USA. Beneath the eye-catching brush texture is a solid understanding of form.
Fechin's father was a woodcarver, and he himself turned to sculpting at the end of the day when there wasn't enough light for painting.

Phenomenal talent !
Thanks for sharing this, too bad there is no book on this artist.
Seeing his work, I can see a ressemblance of his work and Harley Brown's, which I remember for his "Eternal truth for every artist" book.
It was the first time I discovered concepts of soft/hard edges, center of attention, value composition and grouping.
Quite a revelation at the time. :)
Crazy about this portrait.
There is a book by Mary Balcomb.
Crazy about this portrait, love it!
There is actually a book by Mary Balcomb.
we studied him in our anatomy classes, I love his charcoal portraits.
Thanks Loretta, I didn't saw this one.
Still his work warrants a new edition!
