Usually colors get cooler as they recede. When you reverse that principle (as sometimes happens in nature), it looks weird and magical.

I noticed that there are still touches of cool color going into the background, is that to create a smoother transition between those two color schemes? or is it to maintain a sense of harmony in the composition?
Good question. The answer is probably a little of both. I started with cooler colors in back and then painted over them with warms. The bits of blue inevitably left over help with harmony and transitions.
